Hi, I am currently having a nightmare trying to find a dressage saddle that fits both me and my 7 year old Luso mare. I have tried a number of saddles, the Frank Baines Reflex coming closest so far but still not a great fit. I am on a bit of a budget but her comfort comes first. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Rachel , I do sympathise!I spent a fortune on a bespoke saddle that did not fit for long.I  have found the Black Country  saddles suit my Luso x TB and me.I had a number of saddles on trial from Saddles direct which was a great help in getting a good fit, because you can try them at home for a few days.

Katherine Kennedy is also in the process of ordering 2 Black Country saddles (one dressage, one jump), fingers crossed they fit!

Last year Pat Smith asked for mane help as her horse lost half of his mane from having to wear rugs with hoods for months
Now she says...
Following my previous messages, thanks for all the ideas, this winter I swapped to the Mark Todd rugs with detachable necks , no hoods in the stable, and used several bottles of MegaTek on his mane over the year =>much better. Now i jusy need to learn how to do plaits that don't fall out .....

Uxorio is thriving - is extraordinarily happy - at NETHERWYLDE EQUESTRIAN CENTRE in Radlett, Herts, as are several other Iberians. See website. This livery yard with every required facility, can be totally recommended for any Luso, easily accessible from Central London or Radlett etc area.

Does anyone out there know where I can get a branding iron from for freeze branding?

I have recently bred a 7/8 Lusitano and I want to freeze brand her with my own stud mark but I cannot find a company that makes them in the UK

Any help would be much appreciated

News from Emergosol

The black horse pictured below is our new Ortigão Costa stallion, Zolista.  He is only four years old so not yet graded but we do have two of our mares in foal to him.  Zolista is by the stallion Tálio (Latino) and Tálio is currently competing at Grand Prix level ridden by Daniel Pinto.  Zolista was well placed in the Portuguese Dressage cup championship ridden by Emma.

From this year, we only have 2 foals remaining, Duna by Garibaldi out of Salomé (Orphee) and Damasco by Miano out of Nefrite (Fandango).  Both will make 16 hh and are great dressage prospects.  And we still have Azahari now standing over 16 hh and recently backed.  He went to Golegã and excelled himself by behaving perfectly in every way.

With this year's foals just weaned, we are now anxiously awaiting our first foal at the beginning of January.  This is by Talismã who absolutely stunned everyone with his fabulous display at Golegã resulting in amazing offers for the horse and orders for his straws from all over the world.

I thought that you would be interested, especially the Portuguese, in a little known memorial set deep in the heart of the New Forest, UK. It refers to the site of a hutted camp occupied by a Portuguese army unit during the First World War. This unit assisted the depleted local labour force in producing timber for the war effort. The Forestry Commission have retained this fireplace from the cookhouse as a memorial to the men who lived and worked here and acknowledge the financial assistance of the Portuguese Government in its renovation.

The photo shows Tetuã and myself and is credited to Olivia Pile. You can see her collection on my website with a link on the front page.

Best Wishes, Patrick

Hello

I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has a lusitano with foot problems.
My mare was showing forelimb lameness so I had some MRI's taken. This showed that
she had soft tissue damage but I have no idea how this has happened as she is just 6
yrs old and has only done light schooling and hacking. I am wondering if this may be
due to a confirmation defect. The problem is, is that she is a part bred and I am
unable to find out what she was bred with. Her passport just says her sire was full
lusitano and her dam was part lusitano.  Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Bambach/Balimo chairs - May 15th. 2008

I feel my back and seat position in the saddle are not being helped by sitting on my office chair for too many hours each day. At 57 I must do something about it!

I am interested in trying out a Bambach kneeling stool but yesterday read about Tahley Reeve Smith's Balimo chair (p.49 H&H May 8th.), which Eckart Meyners designed.

I am sure the majority of us riders are having the same problem with posture and backs. Now let's do something about it!!

The Bambach website: http://www.bambach.co.uk/ The Balimo website: http://www.balimo.info/

Do you or any other riders use one of these? What's it like? Which one should I go for?Any thoughts or ideas most welcome please.

Thanks, Patrick.

I have used a kneeling stool on and of for many years. It's a great help with flare ups of back pain but it is a litle hard on the knees-mind you that may be because I got a cheap version from Office world.Generally surprisingly comfortable but a bit unnerving to scoot across the office floor on

Portuguese bridle - May 15th.

Having had a wonderful time riding at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, I totally forgot to ask the more knowledgeable Portuguese riders various questions that I had intended to concerning tack.

Tetuã wears a double bridle with thick leather and ornamented metal buckles and fittings. To me it feels very heavy. Is there a lighter version or am I worrying unnecessarily?

Two of the metal ornaments have come off, one on the rein and the other on the noseband. Can one get replacements?

There is a photo of the ornamentation on a single version of his bridle at: http://www.patrickkempe.co.uk/Tetua's_Tale_Sept_05.htm

Any thoughts much appreciated, thanks.

Transport to the Breed Show from Essex

Hi there. I am very keen to take my Luso stallion along to the Annual Breed Show in June, but alas have no transport. Anyone out there needing a travel companion to share costs, or needing company from the Essex area? He is very well mannered and socialised stallion, so he won't be any trouble!

Thank you. Paula                              This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Hi. I own a 4yr old Luso mare and am fairly new to the breed, though I have now become a huge fan! One of her field companions decided it might be fun to chew out a section of her lovely mane, and although it is slowly growing back I was wondering if anyone had any tips/hints.

My imported 5yr old Luso gelding castrated in early April is very colt like and playful with his field companion.  He constantly tears at his companions turnout rug the more white fluffy lining he can extract the better!  This always happens if he has a day off as he is easily bored.  I don’t want to separate them but repairing rugs is affecting my sense of humour!  Any suggestions welcome!  I hope you have read the events page re Fiona Foy’s Clinics.  I am still the only lonely Lusitano rider on the clinic so far!  There must be some more Lusitano owners out there so where are you?  It would be great to get like minded people together to share the ups and downs of training etc. There are some clever? young Andalusians and Warmbloods at the clinic so we are all facing the same sort of challenges!  Please feel free to email me on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it if you are out there!Meanwhile congratulations to Fiona Foy for winning the Prix St George Class on Chico at Moreton recently in Dorset!

My mother has become very good at making to measure portuguese skirts for showing and i wondered if anyone was interested in ordering one for the show season. So far she has used velvet and the normal cotton and both have been excellent.
